TWINS | Conference Ruhr

Cities in Climate Change

With up to 70% of greenhouse gas emissions originating in cities, local governments around the world need to accelerate the implementation of CO2 reduction measures in order to limit global temperature rise to well below 2°C. At the same time, they need to prepare themselves for the adverse effects of climate change. In light of these common challenges, expert dialogues provide a great opportunity to share knowledge and develop capacity.

Building on the tradition of TWIN city partnerships in the Ruhr Metropolitan Area, the conference fostered international knowledge exchange between municipalities and climate experts on the topic of "Cities in Climate Change". Hosted by the Ruhr Regional Association, the KlimaExpo.NRW and the European Green Capital 2017, the city of Essen, the TWINS Conference Ruhr took place at Essen’s iconic UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein.

From 6-8 November 2017, the TWINS Conference Ruhr - Cities in Climate Change provided experts in the fields of environment, climate protection as well as urban and landscape planning with a platform for exchange. The conference combined dialogue-oriented, interactive workshops with regional excursions to interesting climate protection and adaptation projects to foster knowledge transfer and create shared experiences.

Accordingly, the conference did not only focus on short-term exchange, but successfully created sustainable international networks and work environments.

This project was funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
